Hi Kyle,

Yes, several products have. One is in fact a thermostat - we have several patents pending for connecting devices to web feeds from back in 2008 (before everyone was thinking about it).

If you visit our site: http://www.iobridge.com - one of the graphics is a look at a pet feeder that comes out next year.

Postscapes.com is interesting site if you want to see all things IoT. I have been pushing Perl + Internet of Things, but as you found there is only a few projects that use Perl and hardware.

Check out @rblackwe on Twitter. He is a big supporter of hardware and Perl.

Your sprinkler sounds cool... it's the future if you ask me. We have been contacted by many irrigation companies (this is actually an example sited in our patent), but most don't see the return on investment yet. We think that products that are not connected will seem obsolete.

Contact me at hans [at] iobridge.com if you want to dig into these things further!

Cheers,
Hans

Cool post.. I need to buy a new thermostat and stumbled on this while googling for that. Sounds like you basically built your own thermostat with relays? It's been a year now, is there any products integrated with ioBridge yet?

On a similar note, I bought an irrigation caddy sprinkler controller last year, and use perl to nightly query wunderground for precipitation data, tamu for evaporation data, and run my sprinkler "on demand". I wrote it all to be shared, but haven't found the place for sharing it (not much of this type stuff on cpan). Any favorite websites where "internet of things" nerds share ideas/code? I can't find it....

Thanks!

Touchshield Slide is basically an Arduino that drives the display. So, you could use it standalone and talk serial to something else, without another Arduino. I don't have any specific examples, but it would work exactly like my tutorial and code above works.

I just followed some links and not sure where the Aardvark IDE is and see they may have made changes.

Is it possible to access the other hardware serial ports on the Touchshield slide...? I would like to use them instead of using the arduino uno at all. I only have need for serial input. If it is possible, do I access them the same as on the arduino mega..? Can you supply some examples...? Thanks so much..!!

Trevor... thanks for letting me know. "mytoaster" is still making its rounds after 3 years.

What's cool is that ThingSpeak has "status" messages just like Twitter. We have a customer using ThingSpeak for their own version of Twitter for Things. It's pretty cool.

Hi, Hans,

Nice work on touchshield.

When running your code, I encounter problems like this on antipasto, avrdude: ser_open(): can't set com-state for "\\.\COM4"

Any idea how to fix it? I double checked the port and board.

Thanks!

The ioBridge IO-204 could be used for multiple things. It's designed to be left on all day everyday. But, what you have is a good place to start experimenting with Internet of Things things. Do you know Python?

Really awesome stuff!! I got some going with the arduino and processing.org but the io204 seems like the way to make arduino work with the internet. Based on your experience is there any way to find something more less expensive? The io204 seems to cost about 120$. For a beginner is there a something with one channel i could start with?

Yes, I did get Prosperity to fit. The box is now with a friend that gets to play more regularly than me.

I took the bottom box of the original dominion game and reinforced with card board on the sides.

I then divided into three columns using cardboard that I glued to the sides. The important part here was to make sure that each column was a little wider than the cards in landscape.

Printed these files on Avery labels:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/filepage/53771/divider-labels-treasure-banner-style-in-300dpi-inc

Then, I cut index cards to fit the width and notched out each corner. Then I stuck the stickers on the remaining notch. I carefully alternated sides, then realized just needed to flip the index cards.

I grouped actions together, victory points together, and money together and put them alphabetical order (or numerical order for the VPs and money).

The box will be heavy - so make sure to do a good job gluing and reinforcing.

I hope this helps...let me know if you try this.

I've been thinking a lot about this concept since I 'tripped over' this site a week or so ago.
If there was a way that a toaster could identify itself as a toaster (and a coffee-maker as a coffee-maker, etc) then it should be possible for the devices to relate and respond 'semi-autonomously' (beyond me how to actually achieve it though).
There could be libraries of 'tagged phrases' for each device type that are sent and responded to as circumstances change.
If the toaster is 'Toasting' ten times in 20 minutes (for example), a coffee-maker might say "That's a lot of toasting - you got a party going on?" - If a coffee-maker is being used repeatedly, a porch light might say "I hope that's de-cafeinated or somebody's going to be hyper"... A thought...

Items could form their own 'friends groups' based on postings or item type or whatever - and look for new 'things' to extend an invitation to...

Nice work! I've been collecting parts to do the same thing. I've got an iphone so I had to wait for an app to update my latitude location in the background (placetracker). I'm setting mine up with an insteon capable thermostat from smarthome (a venstar). I've already got some home automation stuff going from my mac using indigo 4, so that's any easier path for me. I like that io-204 though, I hadn't heard of it. I'll use some of your example code, thanks!

24V (AC) lines feed my thermostat to the RH and RC lines. With power two the lines, the thermostat works in it's normal condition, without the thermostat is disabled. I use a relay to interrupt the power lines.

Ideally, I would want to use a serial / RS-485 thermostat to have some finer control. Since the time that I posted this article, I have received many email from thermostat companies looking to integrate with ioBridge. Maybe something will work out and this kind of thing could be done easier.

What kind of thermostat do you have? I know a few users have X10 thermostats and that is controllable by the IO-204.

Hi, could you give some details on how to connect the ioBridge on the thermostat? I read the links and the posts on that, but don't know exactly which hardware I need. Can you be more specific? I would like to build such a thing at home. Thanks.

I disconnected the slide (removed) from the Arduino and then re-uploded the code for the Arduio. This time it took. Put the shield back on top of the Arduino, powered it up, and nothing. Does this mean that when uploading to these boards, I must separate the slide from the Arduino in order to upload to the Arduino? I'm using the USB to power these boards. Does this make any difference i.e., should I be using a different power supply when running these boards after programming?

Again, thanks in advance.

On the touch side, change this section to send (Serial.print...) "mouseX" to the Arduino.

Downloaded the demo program and ran into a problem. The slide program compiled and loaded OK. The Aeduino program compiled OK, but, when loading the Arduino program I get the following error:

[exec] avrdude: stk500_2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout

I have no idea what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Hans!

thanks for reading me
I'm trying to modify your example to send mouseX to the arduino then back to the slide to be displayed as decimal. So far I get random numbers.

If you could kindly give me a hand with this I think I would be sorted for good.

Hi
I think I solved the problem. I disconnected pins 0 and 1 of the arduino and it solved the problem.

Hi
Thanks for the tutorial! I have a question. My arduino loses it's hardware serial communication when the slide is connected to it. I'm working on a midi synth a was hoping to use hardware serial for handling midi and software serial for slide commands. The hardware serial data resumes when I lift off the slide.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Great work you're doing! Could you please drop me an email when you get a chance, I'd love to discuss your work in more detail.

This was actually one of the Latitude team's examples when the API was launched: http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/05/do-more-with-google-latitude-and-your.html

For folks interested in developing with the Latitude API, please see the Google Code site here as well: http://code.google.com/apis/latitude/

You need a remoteable Android API for ioBridge.

Then SL4A scripts launched from Locale could call them...no Latitude needed.

I'm extremely interested in this project. It's funny because I was trying to figure out how to do this very kind of thing a few nights ago. Here I was thinking it was an original idea...

Anyway, I'm a bit vague on the HVAC connection requirements. I don't have an HVAC panel, and I'd like to just directly connect to the control lines, basically replacing my existing termostat. Is it required that we setup the timing between the fan and compressor coming on, or do we just close the appropriate relays and the HVAC unit figures it out?

I would like to look into how to use this setup but have it talk to crestron instead and then I can automate from there. Thoughts? Contact me via email if you want to discuss further.
Gotta agree with Shadowlord here. Boardgames are no longer just a series of minutes separated by waiting for your turn and random dice rolls. It is an outstanding opportunity to keep your brain able to absorb new problems and form strategies. For anyone who has played historical games (Aerodrome, Tide of Iron, Flames of War) there is hell of a lot you can learn about history by playing. Boardgames are now creative and they're fun. Certainly not least of all, it is a chance for you to gather with some real live humans away from todays world of flashy graphics and cheap storylines and connect through a simple challenge (pint of beer optional).

@hans - Thank you so much for your reply,
Quick question though, If I am continuously sending data from arduino to slide, wont the while statement keep seeing that serial.available is true and keep the while loop running? Therefore, is it necessary to interrupt it each time?

Thanks!

Sounds like what is happening is that you are getting one Byte over the serial - that would explain the 256 limitation.

You may need to you use a Byte Array.

<blockquote>char charIn = 0;
byte i = 0;
char stringIn[32] = "";

while(Serial.available()) {
    charIn = Serial.read();
    stringIn[i] = charIn;
    i += 1;
}</blockquote>

You then can covert the byte array into an integer with the following line:

<blockquote>int newInt = atoi(stringIn);</blockquote>

Let me know if that helps.

I had a quick question for anyone who knows. I am writing a program that pulls in analog data from the arduino (converts it using 14bits) and passes that value to the Slide. Unfortunately, the data I receive goes up to a value of 1024, and I cannot pass anything greater than 256 through the software serial. For some reason, I cant pass any integers greater than 256 through the softwareserial, and I can only pass them as a byte. Anyone know a way around this?

[...] This is super simple as well. Using a screw terminal board, I just connected one wire to ground and the other to a digital input. The water meter contains a reed relay contact switch. As the meter reads each gallon of water, it connects and disconnects the switch. All ioBridge needs to do is read the numbers of times the switch closes to get the number of gallons used. The latest revision ioBridge modules have built in pull-up resistors, so I didn’t even need to add them myself (as done here with the Twittering Toaster) [...]

I am a web developer with ioBridge. So, I gotta recommend hacking with the IO-204 (http://www.iobridge.com/products). You can interact with it using web sites or web apps and if you have an arduino, you can get the Arduino online. It's cool. Let me know if you start working on some other hacks.

I've been excited to tinker with some electronics lately. I'd purchased a few items from Radio Shack including a learning lab... Then returned everything to get something more real world.

Last night I returned the learning lab and purchased the Mini Vox robot for $10, assuming taking it apart for the parts and some entertainment would be worth it.

I played around with it for two minutes then I took it apart. I didn't get as far as you before I put it back together for a bit more fun before salvaging the parts (since I don't know exactly what to use them for yet).

I got home later and decided to google "Mini Vox hacks" and found that you'd done (almost) the exact same thing!

Also, for the last two weeks I've been researching the Arduino, and you happen to have worked with that as well. I'm a web developer, but I'm still amazed at how incredible it is that many people are doing the same things, and how easy it is to collaborate/share access information almost instantaneously.

Fun article. Thanks!

Hi,

Like Adam I could not get your demo to work.

The problem was that I used an Arduino MEGA.
When I used the Duemilanove it worked fine.

It seems AFSoftSerial doesn't work with a MEGA.

If I comment out the following IF tests:
   if(touchSerial.available())
and
   if (c == 'A')
along with their opening & closing braces then it also works on the MEGA board.

Hi Hans! great job what you've done so far with the Arduino and the TouchShield. I am also experimenting with the touch using serial transmission from the arduino. I got the comunication done, but it seems to work real slow in the touch, meaning the moment to display the data as lines (It's a simple oscilloscope). Looks like the time the touch takes to read serial, process data and print lines with the obtained points is too much, and so much of the data is lost during the process. I wonder if you got any ideas on how to speed up the touch.. I'd appreciate any help, if possible.

Curiously, the Serial monitor see no activity either.
Possibly the TouchShield cannot print to serial... though I find no such documentation to support this.

Yes I noticed that but that didn't change anything, so the problem must lie somewhere else. I'm simply trying to control an RGB LED. This is my test code, any ideas?

#define TX_PIN 2
AFSoftSerial touchSerial = AFSoftSerial(RX_PIN, TX_PIN);
int redPin = 10;
int greenPin = 11;
int bluePin = 9;
int light;

The fix might be as simple as making the equal sign a double equal sign:

<blockquote>if(touchSerial.read() == 1){
do whatever
}</blockquote>

Hi, one more question...

Is the reverse true for sending data from the TouchShield to the Arduino?

I am trying to get the arduino to recieve serial data sent from the TouchShield. Like

TouchShield sends:

<blockquote>Serial.print(1);</blockquote>

Arduino reads:

<blockquote>if(touchSerial.read() = 1){
do whatever
}</blockquote>

These commands do not seem to be working.

On the TouchShield slide, you need a character array to hold strings.

Add this to the main loop:

<blockquote>char charIn = 0;
byte i = 0;
char stringIn[32] = "";

while(Serial.available()) {
  charIn = Serial.read();
  stringIn[i] = charIn;
  i += 1;
}

if (stringIn[0])
{
background(0,0,0);
text(stringIn, 75, 75);
}</blockquote>

This will allow you to display strings up to 32 characters.

Yes, I did touch the screen, and no, it your code still for some reason does not work.

But after adding the software serial lines, my code is working! Thank you, I think I understand now.

The only remaining problem is how do I display what I am literally sending and not the ASCII back conversion.

i.e. I send "A" and I get 65 displayed. So if I send "Hello" how do I display "Hello"?

The code you posted in your comment does not work since the TouchShield is using Pins 2/3 of the Arduino to read and write serial.

On the Arduino, you need to use a software serial line that uses Pins 2/3.

<strong>Add to head:</strong>

<blockquote>#include <AFSoftSerial.h>

#define RX_PIN  3
#define TX_PIN  2

AFSoftSerial touchSerial =  AFSoftSerial(RX_PIN, TX_PIN);</blockquote>

<strong>Add to setup:</strong>

<blockquote>touchSerial.begin(9600);</blockquote>

<strong>Add to main loop:</strong>

<blockquote>touchSerial.print(randNumber);
delay(100);</blockquote>

Hello,

May I ask how this is supposed to work? I downloaded your app and uploaded to the Arduino & TouchShield and it's a blank screen. I checked the Serial Monitor and saw no numbers being sent. So I tried this basic code to see if serial is possible at a more basic level:

<blockquote>//Arduino
void setup(){
  Serial.begin(9600);
}

void loop(){
  Serial.print(20);
  delay(1000);
}</blockquote>

<blockquote>//TouchShield
void setup(){
  Serial.begin(9600);
  background(0,0,0);
}

void loop(){
  text(Serial.read(),80,80);
}</blockquote>

The results of the above code are visible '20s' on the Serial Monitor, so I know the Arduino is pulling its weight, but the TouchShield is displaying a '-1' which I assume means that it's not seeing the serial. Something is not lining up.

My goodness that is simply beautiful! I really like what you have done. I'm still just a little confused though, how does the ioBridge connect to the internet, do you still need an ethernet cable? Wireless network or something else entirely. I'm really keen to find out as I'd like to try and make something like this myself and I want to avoid having to go through the IT department each time I want to connect. Thanks again for an excellent project!<br /><br />Maya

You can also keep the water off of boil for another minute for a total of 3 minutes. The aeropress will make good cups with varying temps. It's better to use it to make colder coffee and fill the cup up with really hot water. The less you actually make the better. And, yes, I have to pulverize the bean. It has to be fine. Keep temp low, fine grind, and add hot water to warm it all back up.

Yumm, I just enjoyed my coffee of the day and must concur that it's the experience more then the "jolt".<br/><br/>I find French roast to be "too dark" (says the guy who likes "expresso" roast) and think it tastes like cigarette butts.<br/><br/>Do you grind your aeropress on the finest of the fine? I found a medium fine gave it a more nutty flavor.<br/><br/>I'm on this wierd cusp of being able to get a fine cream out of my aeropress but I seem to have lost the magic again. I'll try your plan of letting the water sit.<br/><br/>Maybe I can get you to make me a cup sometime!
